The Central University of Andhra Pradesh occupies a special place in the Indian university system. It was born out of the promise made by the Government of India to fulfill the aspirations of the people of Andhra Pradesh on the eve of the partition of Andhra Pradesh into the erstwhile United State of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
The university was established in 2018 at the district headquarters town of Anantapuramu in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. The region has historical significance as it is part of the Vijayanagara Empire ruled by the royal king Sri Krishnadevaraya. The folklore of this region is replete with stories of people-centred rule of Sri Krishnadevaraya and many welfare measures. Apart from this, the region is also known for its mineral deposits and the healthy climate of the Deccan Plateau. The region is also known for sericulture and horticultural crops. As a wing in CAP, global auto major KIA started its operations in a green field project just 60 kms from Anantapuramu city. Apart from this Anantapuramu is a major educational center of higher educational institutions like Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Education, Government Medical College and Engineering Colleges apart from a century old Government Arts College.
The establishment of the Central University of Andhra Pradesh ushered in a new era in the field of higher education. With socially and culturally relevant innovative academic programmes, the University is poised for rapid growth in the years to come. Transforming students into knowledgeable and responsible citizens of the country through value based education, emphasizing interactive education with experience is the hallmark of this new university. Accordingly, the University envisages to offer demand driven multi disciplinary courses focusing on experiential learning through a number of short and long term professional courses in active collaboration with industry.
Over time the University will also introduce Study India program with academic grade/credit transfer option to meet the needs of foreign students.
History
In 2014, Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated through the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014. The Act mandated the Government of India to establish institutions of national importance, one of which should be a central university in the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh. ] In May 2018, the Union Cabinet awarded ₹450 crore to the university for the project. (US$59 million) has been approved. The University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been selected to guide the new university in June 2018. A bill was approved in July 2018 and the university's transit campus was inaugurated at the IT Business Incubation Centre, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Anantapur. in August 2018. 491.3 acres (198.8 ha) of land was allotted for the construction of the permanent campus. The Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was introduced in the Lok Sabha in July 2019 and passed in both the houses in the same month.
